Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an emerging technology that integrates database operations with maps to solve problems and make decisions. GIS software is a computer-based analysis and mapping tool widely used by schools, governments, and businesses. Science uses GIS in teaching complex scientific concepts through visualizing spatial and temporal relations of subjects in study. For instance, GIS is used to teach how to track movement and evolution and to predict damaging impact of a hurricane, and to analyze how decertification responds to global climate change and increasing excessive human activities. Homeland Security uses GIS in the response and recovery efforts for September 11.
