What is the difference between subscripts and coefficients? What does “balancing” a chemical equation mean? Many students have trouble with these fundamental concepts in chemistry and this prevents them from reaching the next level of learning. If a student does not fully understand the chemical formula, moles, reactions and stoichiometry are hopelessly confusing. This hands-on session will give you some elegant, intuitive, and well-differentiated lessons that allow students of all ability levels to master the chemical formula and therefore move confidently into deeper understanding of chemistry.

Building Underwater Robots in the Classroom as Part of STEM Education

Participants will learn how to use underwater robots or ROVs to support STEM education. This will be a hands-on workshop. After a short presentation on the history and uses of ROVs the class in small teams will be allowed to design, create and build their own underwater Robot. This is an activity that teachers can use in their classrooms or have a travel educational outreach team visit their school.

Energy Conversions with a Table Top Roller Coaster

A table top roller coaster will be used to examine conservation of energy. Students identify with the coaster because most have ridden an amusement park coaster. See the conversion between gravitational energy and kinetic energy. Interpret the energy bar graphs produced. Observe the effects of friction. This coaster is also used in study of friction.
