Student Volunteer Information

The Michigan Science Teachers Association is excited to offer education students the opportunity to volunteer 3 hours of their time during its annual conference in exchange for the conference registration fee. This is a great opportunity for students heading into education to meet science teachers at all levels and to observe a wide variety of workshops (over 200) geared toward science at all levels; elementary, middle, high school and even college.

Is there any cost for the volunteers?

We are looking for college student volunteers to assist at the conference on Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday. All college student volunteers who work one 3-hour shift will receive free registration ($35 for students) and a free T-shirt. Students are only required to be a member of MSTA, a student membership is only $25. It is a great deal for students and a great opportunity for them to participate in many workshops over the two day conference.

What do volunteers do at the conference?

At the conference, volunteers work in several different areas helping to make the conference run smoothly. Some of the tasks are:

  • Prepare packets and bags - we need around 18-20 volunteers to come to the conference location on Thursday morning to prepare packets for the conference attendees.
  • Pre-registration - we need approximately 16 volunteers to hand out packets to all pre-registered conference attendees on Friday and 10 volunteers on Saturday.
  • Sign set-up & take down - we need 3-6 volunteers at the beginning of the conference, Saturday morning, and at the end of the conference for signs.
  • MSTA Bookstore - set up, take down, and possibly help with the bookstore.
  • Speakers, Vendors - we need several volunteers to staff the speaker room and help vendors with set up and tear down.
  • Raffle - we need several volunteers to pick up raffle prizes and help with the raffle drawings.
