"Power Verb" also reinforce test taking vocabulary, and will help students master the constructed and extended responses that occur on all content area MEAP tests. We will model techniques for color-coding key vocabulary, creating word-walls and journals. We will also introduce Graphic Organizers custom designed for science and three basic Graphic Organizers that can be used easily in all content areas. We will share success stories from districts that have used our techniques to improve MEAP science scores.

Primary Subjects: Biology
Interest Level: College, High School
Location: Lansing Center - Governor's Room
Proteomics is the study, function, and interaction of proteins with each other and with their environment. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn to use protein electrophoresis to generate protein from the muscle of distant and closely related species of fish. Detectable variations between organisms' proteins reflect physiological adaptations to their environments, but they originate as random DNA mutations. Such mutation events, if favorable, persist through natural selection and contribute to the evolution of species with new specialized functions. Test the hypothesis that protein are indicators of evolutionary relatedness and apply your findings to the problem of solving evolutionary relationships by constructing cladograms from your own gel electrophoresis results. Learn about proteomics and explore evolution within the context of the complete central dogma of biology: DNA -> RNA -> Protein -> Trait.
