1. Leadership

"To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves!'"
Lao-tsu

Thank you to Herm Boatin, Science Consultant and Adjunct Professor of Biology at University of Michigan-Dearborn, for contributing this leadership quote.

Teacher Challenge-NASA-International Polar Year

From March 2007 to March 2008, the scientific community is recognizing the International Polar Year. Scientists from around the world are examining the Arctic and Antarctic regions of Earth. NASA's Exploring Space Challenges invites K-12 teachers to design a challenge in conjunction with this event. Judges will select the best Challenges in grade-level categories K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. One overall winning Challenge will be used by NASA ESC for the next school year. Registration is open until Dec. 30, 2007. For more information, visit:

High School Science

Michigan High School Math and Science Symposium

The Michigan High School Math and Science Symposium is an opportunity for all students to showcase their high school research projects in a professional setting. It is a capstone activity to celebrate the conclusion of an individual or team effort. It is a chance to establish credentials, which may lead to a scholarship, apprenticeship or university acceptance not otherwise within reach. Perhaps most of all, the MHSMSS offers a chance to meet peers and share your knowledge with others in a collegial setting.

The 9th Annual MHSMSS will be hosted at the GVSU Eberhard Center in Grand Rapids on April 25, 2008. The Symposium is open to all Michigan high school students. The MHSMSS was awarded an Education Excellence Award from the Michigan Association of School Boards in 2006. The Symposium is sponsored by the Regional Math & Science Center at Grand Valley State University. Middle and High School Science

Summer Fellowship Opportunity in Physiology

In our last e-blast there was an article dealing with the summer fellowship opportunity for middle and high school science. One of our Points of Contact has wonderful words to share about this experience. Here is her testimonial: The first thing I must share is that this fellowship is the most rewarding thing I have ever done for my professional life. As a 2007 Frontiers in Physiology Professional Development Fellow, I participated in three program components: Experiencing Scientific Research, Exploring Effective Pedagogy, and Developing New Materials.

Throughout the year of the fellowship, I participated in: eight weeks of biomedical research in the laboratory of a physiologist during the summer; online activities throughout the year; and a summer Science Teaching Forum to explore effective online and in-class pedagogies.

I worked in the biomedical research lab of Dr. Benedict R. Lucchesi, at the University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Pharmacology, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The research studies in Dr. Lucchesi's laboratory at the University of Michigan Medical School focus on three subject areas including: blood clotting (thrombus) in a major artery to the heart or brain respectively, sudden cardiac death due to an electrical disorganization of the heart rhythm (ventricular fibrillation) and ischemia/reperfusion injury.

The fellowship not only offered me an opportunity to learn about scientific research, but it also helped me to expand my repertoire of pedagogy. Over the fellowship year I explored websites with outstanding teaching resources, discussed readings about effective teaching and learning, and reflected on my own teaching. The teacher discussion and reflection areas are provided through the University of California - Berkeley's Project WISE (Web-based Inquiry Science Environment) web site.

One of the highlights of the fellowship was the summer Science Teaching Forum held center near Washington, DC, when Research Teachers took a break from our research experience to gather at a conference for an intensive week of exploration, sharing, and brainstorming. Each of us also developed an inquiry-based classroom activity or lab. Selected activities are published by APS in print form, on the APS website, and on a CD-ROM.

The culminating event of the research experience will be attending the 2008 Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego, CA (April 2008). At the meeting, we will learn about research findings presented by more than 10,000 scientists, and attend a full-day workshop and be honored at a special APS luncheon.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Monica at:
mvan-y@mhacademy.com

The American Physiology Society (APS) offers a wonderful professional development/research experience for middle and high school life science and biology teachers. The application deadline is January 10, 2008. For more information, please visit: http://www.the-aps.org/education/frontiers/app.html

Elementary and Middle School Science

New Fisheries Content Enhances Online Curriculum

A new curriculum content highlighting Great Lakes fisheries is now available online via Michigan Sea Grant's website, Fisheries Learning on the Web (FLOW). Four new and revised classroom lessons and hands-on activities help educators and students observe and identify Great Lakes fish, understand the fundamentals of fish habitat and life cycles, and learn how scientists monitor the movement of fish populations.

The new FLOW lessons were developed in collaboration with fisheries experts at the University of Michigan and reviewed by seven Michigan science teachers. All lessons meet state and national science education standards and benchmarks and are designed for educators and students in grades 4 through 8. To download the curriculum, please visit:
