1. Leadership
Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening the heart. Leadership is about inspiration-of oneself and of others. Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. It is an attitude, not a routine.
More than anything else today, followers believe they are part of a system, a process that lacks heart. If there is one thing a leader can do to connect with followers at a human, or better still a spiritual level, it is to become engaged with them fully, to share experiences and emotions, and to set aside the processes of leadership we have learned by rote.
Lance Secretan, Industry Week
Thank you to Herm Boatin, Science consultant and lecturer, University of Michigan-Dearborn, for contributing this leadership quote.
Building a Presence
What is a Key Leader?
The Key Leader (KL) is a person who has the role of working with multiple Points of Contacts within a specific school system or geographic region in the state. One of the responsibilities for a KL is to identify PoC for the schools within their region. Another could involve training the PoC in using the network. Do you know who your Key Leader is?

The K-7 Companion Documents can be downloaded at:
http://www.bcmsc.k12.mi.us/mde_files.htm
It should be noted that they are still "officially" in "draft" form and are not the MDE Approved version. This is because they still need to go through the official MDE process. Once they are MDE Approved, they will be found on the MDE website and the word "draft" will be taken off. There are only two files available at this time, one for grades K-4 (414 pages) and one for grades 5-7 (293 pages). Eventually, they will be available as separate grade level documents.
If you would like more explanation regarding the Companion Documents, you can visit:
http://science.resa.net
Then click on Curriculum.
Then click on K-7 Expectations (in the left hand column).
There you will find the companion documents for download, as well as podcasts describing each document. These podcasts include a general description of the expectations for each grade level and an explanation of the companion document for each grade level.

Free Physics Workshops
The Michigan Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (MIAAPT) is offering two six-hour workshops based on AAPT's Physics Teaching Resource Agents (PTRA) Workshops. The first will be offered at the MSTA meeting in Detroit on Saturday, March 7th. It is entitled, MSTA Motion Workshop. The second will be offered in Lansing at the MIAAPT conference on March 27th and 28th. It is entitled, MIAAPT Waves Workshop. The workshop leaders will be Nicole Murawski, Royal Oak High School and Alan Gibson, retired Rochester Adams High School. Both have been trained by AAPT/PTRA as workshop leaders. These workshops, funded by an AAPT/MIAAPT mini-grant, are free to participants. Stipends and additional travel funds are available for teachers from districts defined as rural by the US DOE. Please check:
http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch
to see if you qualify for funding from this source.
Using an inquiry-based approach, these workshops will emphasize activities that can be used in your classroom. For the several laboratory activities presented, participants will analyze collected data using graphical, pictorial, and mathematical models. A CD of all activities will be provided to participants so that teachers can modify them for their unique situation. These activities are representative of laboratory activities done in middle and high school classes.
Because of limited funds and the hands-on nature of these workshops, only 24 teachers can be accepted to attend. There will be a waiting list if more than 24 teachers sign up in advance. Since they need to order materials in advance, they ask that a $50 check be sent to hold a spot in each workshop. The checks should be made out to the Michigan Section of AAPT. Your checks will be returned at the conclusion of each workshop; therefore they need a separate check for each workshop. Please put in the 'check notes' either MSTA or MIAAPT to identify the appropriate workshop. To register for workshops, contact:
Alan Gibson
fziksman@yahoo.com
NOTE: You must register for the MSTA meeting to attend the workshop on March 7th in Detroit. MIAAPT will provide free registration to each workshop participant for the Waves Workshop.
Directions and maps available for the MSTA Workshop at
http://www.msta-mich.org/conference/
Directions and maps will be available for the MIAAPT Workshop at
http://www.miaapt.org/
in late January or early February.
