1. Leadership

"Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don't quit until you attain it. When you do attain it, set another goal, and don't quit until you reach it. Never quit."
Bear Bryant

Thank you to Herm Boatin, Science consultant and lecturer, University of Michigan-Dearborn, for contributing this leadership quote.

Science Humor

3a. Let's Have Some Fun

Teacher: I hope I didn't see you looking at Fred's Science Test, Tommy.
Tommy: I hope you didn't, too, sir.

Talking about attributes...
Andy was having a rough day on the playground. He kept climbing and falling, climbing and falling. More frustrated than hurt with his scrapes and bruises, he proclaimed: I wish there was no such thing as hard!

A school started a sex education program, and on the first day little Megan came home and told her mother... We learned how to make babies today. Stunned at the speed with which the subject was being taught, her mother asked... All right, tell me how you make babies. Megan said...You drop the y and add i.e.s!

4b. MDE Posts Lessons of Effective Instruction Videos for Professional Development

The Curriculum and Instruction Unit in the Office of Educational Improvement and Innovation has posted a series of videotaped Lessons of Effective Instruction and related documents to the Michigan Department of Education website. The Lessons of Effective Instruction were developed by and feature Michigan teachers engaged with teaching and learning in their own elementary, middle and high school classrooms. These lessons were designed for use by teachers, schools, or districts, individually or in groups, to model, problem solve, and spark reflection and professional learning. Each lesson is accompanied by a PDF document with questions that will generate reflection and discussion. The lessons incorporate Fred Newmann's widely accepted Standards for Teaching and Learning (higher-order thinking, deep knowledge, substantive conversation, and connections to the world beyond the classroom) and meet Standards, Benchmarks, and Grade Level/Course Content Expectations and Guidelines. To access these lessons and bookmark them for future use, go to:

Science Matters to Parents

5a. What Can a Parent Do to Support Good Science Education

  • Learn about and investigate the natural world with your child. You don't have to know all the answers.
  • Instill in your child the belief that he/she can succeed in science and that hard work pays off.
  • Encourage your child to read about science and scientists and provide opportunities for them to explore science in your community.
  • Learn to recognize a standards-based K-12 science program.
  • Talk with your child's teacher about their needs, concerns, and expectations for students in science.
  • Volunteer to help in the classroom during science activities and learn with your child.
  • Advocate for the resources necessary for a standards-based K-12 science program.
  • Learn about the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations and the Michigan Graduation Standards in science and how they are used in the school's science program.

8c. Learn the Science Behind Winter Olympic Athletes Movements

How does angular momentum help figure skater Rachael Flatt achieve the perfect triple toe loop? How does elastic collision allow three-time Olympic hockey player Julie Chu convert a game-winning slapshot? How do Newton's Three Laws of Motion propel short-track speed skater J.R. Celski to the finish line? These are just a few of the scientific principles explored in a special 16-part video series entitled "The Science of the Olympic Winter Games," presented by NBC Learn, NBC Olympics and the National Science Foundation. In each piece in the series, an NSF-supported scientist explains the selected scientific principle, while Olympic athletes describe how these principles apply to their respective sports. The science is broken down by capturing the athletes' movements with a state-of-the-art, high-speed camera called the Phantom Cam, which can capture movement at rates of up to 1,500frames per second. This allows frame-by-frame illustrations of Newton's Three Laws of Motion, the Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum, friction, drag, speed, velocity and other scientific concepts.
