March 20, 2010: Science Matters Leadership Meeting at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Hotel, Room 308 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. It is for State Coordinators, Super Key Leaders and Key Leaders. More information will follow.
Students were given the task of writing an essay in science on the most beautiful natural object they had ever seen. The least aesthetic young man in the class handed in his paper first with astonishing speed. It was short and to the point - The most beautiful natural object I have ever seen was too beautiful for words.
Little ones who started kindergarten at a certain elementary school came home the first day with a special note for mom and dad from the teachers which read, in part: If you promise not to believe everything your child says happens at school, I'll promise not to believe everything they say happens at home.
The secret of teaching science is to appear to have known all your life what you learned last night.
4a. National Directory of STEM Learning Opportunities Now Available
Are you looking for an opportunity to promote and expand an after-school science or technology program? NSTA partner The Coalition for Science After School has teamed up with Time Warner Cable to create a national directory of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning opportunities. This resource is designed to help parents and young people access science and technology learning opportunities in their communities and will be widely marketed to increase the visibility of STEM after school and informal learning opportunities. Visit the Coalition website to learn more about the directory and to enter information about your organization and its programs and events (where applicable). There is no cost to join or access the national directory. Questions about the directory, the Coalition, or informal STEM education should be directed to info@directory.scienceafterschool.org. Or you can visit: http://scienceafterschool.org

Students interested in participating in the Michigan Envirothon register as a team of five students, each team must have an adult advisor. The deadline for registering for the Michigan Envirothon is February 12, the registration fee for each team is $100. Any high school student in Michigan is eligible to participate in the Envirothon. During the Envirothon competition teams are tested in an outdoors, hands-on setting, on seven conservation topics including, agriculture, aquatic ecology, energy, forestry, soils/geology, wildlife and a unique topic selected each year. Each team also completes a community outreach project addressing a natural resources concern in their community.
Teams first compete in regional competitions held in March in preparation for the state competition. In 2010 the state competition will be held at the Leelanau Outdoor Center in Maple City on May 13 and 14. The winner of the Michigan Envirothon will compete in the Canon North American Envirothon at California State University in Fresno that includes teams from across the United States and Canada. Middle School and High School Science
Science educators will be critical to the success of National Lab Day. NLD projects are teacher-driven. Teachers will be partnered with outside experts to assess current labs, update or refurbish lab equipment, conduct equipment and materials inventory, or clean and repair equipment. Or teachers can elect to have STEM professionals work with them to:
- implement hands-on projects,
- start a fund-raising effort to buy needed supplies,
- help with science fairs,
- mentor a student,
- coordinate and host field trips,
- provide internship opportunities,
- donate materials, and
- assist with lesson plans.
Projects can also center on computer or outdoor labs-anywhere where hands-on lessons in the STEM subjects can come alive. These are just a few of the suggestions, and many more can be found at www.nationallabday.org. National Lab Day is an important step in an ongoing involvement between STEM professionals and local schools and teachers nationwide. You are encouraged to learn more and to sign up your project today at www.nationallabday.org
