3a. MEAP-Access Assessment

The MEAP-Access assessment was operationally administered for the first time in Fall 2009. Low reliabilities from the first operational administration showed a need for more extensive modification of MEAP items to provide access to the content for the intended participants in MEAP-Access. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has spent considerable energy in planning for the additional modifications to be in place for Fall 2010. It has become clear, after internal discussions and discussions with contractors, that attempting to put the modifications in place could possibly result in insufficiently high reliabilities in 2010 as well. To read more about this, please visit: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/MEAP-Access_One-Year_Delay_310708_7.pdf

Science Humor

4a. Let's Have Some Fun

Little Billy brought home his report card. His mother and father took him to task for all of the low grades in science. Little Billy responded, "It's got its good side too. You know darn well I am not cheating."

The teacher asked, "Tell me, Erin, if I had nine apples and there were twelve children, how would I divide them equally?" Erin thought for a moment, then replied happily, "Make applesauce!"

Child: I got a hundred in school today.

Parent: That's wonderful. What did you get a hundred in?

Child: Two things. I got fifty in science and 50 in social studies.

9b. Biology Field Test

Are you interested in participating in a current NSF-funded study? The project is known as the RAPID Biology project; it is an extension project to the Science of Atoms and Molecules (SAM).

The goal of the SAM project was to introduce molecular level reasoning into physics, chemistry, and biology through computer-based molecular models of concepts currently taught in those classes (you can browse the database of activities at: http://sam.concord.org

The goal of the RAPID Biology extension is to determine the impact of the physics and chemistry molecular models on students' molecular comprehension of biology concepts. The Concord Consortium is seeking participants for two aspects of this study.

  1. They need a population of students who have completed biology to take a Biology Molecular Concept Inventory (Biology MCI). They have recently revised this 40 question multiple-choice test and need to validate it with students who have completed a biology course. They are offering $10 gift cards to Barnes and Noble or $10 of coupons for Ben & Jerry's ice cream for students who take this test. They are offering $50 for teachers to proctor the administration of this test, which should take about 40 minutes for students to complete. This test is delivered via computer, so participating teachers will need access to one computer for each student. This test can be offered during a normal class period, if your students took biology last year, or it can be offered before or after school or during a study period.
  2. They need a population of current biology students to take up to three open-ended assessments: (a) Diffusion & Osmosis, (b) DNA to Proteins, and (c) Structure and Function of Macromolecules). They recently developed these open-ended questions and would like a population of students who have not used the SAM activities as a comparison group. They are offering $100 for teachers to give at least two of these assessments to their biology classes. Each assessment is about 5 questions long and is designed to take about 20 minutes of class time so that each can be used as a quiz-type assessment. They have also developed answer keys and rubrics to make it easy for you to use these assessments as quizzes in your existing grading schema.

All of the expenses related to your participation in this study would be fully paid (postage, photocopying, etc.)--just keep the receipts.

If you would like more information or are interested in participating in one or both of these portions, please contact:

Sarah J. Pryputniewicz

Research Assistant

10a. Michigan Student Energy Survey

The National Foundation for Energy Education is inviting your students to participate in the "Michigan/National Student Energy Survey." Energy is and will continue to be an issue that confronts America's leaders for decades to come. What do your school's science students think about these issues?

The 15 question on-line survey is easy to take (4-6 minutes) and alerts students to today's and tomorrow's energy supply and demand issues. If needed, short 12-20 second videos accompany each question to provide the respondent with additional information about the question. Teachers can have students take the survey in class or at home and then discuss the issues in class.

You must register to receive a school code. You will then be sent an email in 24 hours with your school's 6 digit school code. The same code enables you to print reports of the survey results. These results along with a sample press release, will be eagerly received by the school and local newspapers. March 19th is the last day the survey can be taken. National organizers will send you the results for Michigan and the National Student Energy Surveys in early April.

Register by visiting: http://www.thegreatamericanenergydebate.org/register.asp

Also please note: This survey by the National Foundation for Energy Education (NFEE) is open to everyone but is not the same program or foundation being utilized by Consumers Energy in their energy optimization pilot program around the state. That program, called "THINK! Energy", is being developed by the National Energy Foundation (NEF).

11a. US Dept of Energy Grant Program for Middle School Teachers

Fermilab is offering a limited number of positions in its DOE ACTS cohort starting in the summer of 2010. Priority for this cohort will be given to mid-level teachers (grades 5-9). Participants will meet at Fermilab for four weeks each summer for three years. During the academic year following each summer, as participants implement their summer work in their schools and work on small projects, they will be supported by program staff and by each other, primarily through online meetings, with one or two face-to-face meetings as well.

The program combines three strands of professional development: scientific research, teaching & learning, and educational leadership. Each year teachers will participate in a research project which will be woven together with the other two strands to strengthen and reinforce one another. Participants will receive an $800/week stipend for their summer work. Non-local participants will also receive housing and travel. All participants will be eligible for grants to support classroom equipment purchases and travel to professional development conferences.

11b. Young Scientist Challenge

The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is the premier national science competition for students in grades 5 through 8. The Young Scientist Challenge is designed to encourage the exploration of science and innovation among America's youth and to promote the importance of science communication. In 1999, Discovery Communications launched the competition to nurture the next generation of American scientists at a critical age when interest in science begins to decline. In 2008 3M joined forces with Discovery Education in a quest to nurture the next generation of American scientists with an innovative and interactive science program open to every middle school student in America. Over the last ten years, more than 600,000 middle school students have been nominated to participate in the competition, and winners have gone on to speak in front of members of Congress, work with the nation's top scientists, and pursue academic careers in the sciences.
